Success stories

  • "We are passionate about careers in construction and manufacturing and believe that apprenticeships play a vital role in brining new, talented people at all stages of their career into this exciting sector."

    - Peter Kay, Head of Learning & Development

  • Completing my MBA with Tarmac and the Open University marks one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of my career. The opportunity to undertake this excellent course alongside my role via a Senior Leaders Apprenticeship was both an exciting and daunting prospect, the management concepts, teaching, and networking opportunities have been superb. Completing coursework and work-based projects whilst applying the learning into my role has been a significant personal and professional commitment but the full support from my Line Managers, colleagues and L&D team really helped with this.  An MBA offers a broad range of advanced business and leadership knowledge along with means of critically thinking about these and translating them into your professional practise but there are many other courses.

I am actively exploring opportunities by which my team can benefit from utlising the apprenticeship route for other forms of training. This involves discussions with Universities and individuals where this type of learning can form part of their personal development and career journey.

    - Robert Palmer, Head of Technical Services

  • "Guidance from Digital Native has helped me build statistical models, learn coding languages and develop knowledge on the different elements of data. As well as finding this enjoyable to learn, I have been able to produce forecasting models and extract data from our databases with SQL. I have found that Digital Native go the extra mile to help you understand subjects you find challenging and solve problems with their real-world commercial experience."

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a real job with training, which meets an approved national standard. It is a way for individuals to earn while they learn, gaining valuable skills and knowledge in a specific job role.

The apprenticeship levy was introduced in April 2017, it applies to employers with a pay bill over £3 million each year.  Tarmac aims to utilize its Apprenticeship levy to:

  • Attract new talent into the business
  • Address skills shortages
  • Upskill and reskill existing workforce
  • Create a industry leading skills academy

The formal off-the-job training element of the apprenticeship is provided by an approved training provider and apprentices will typically spend 20% of their time conducting guided learning with the training provider. The guided learning will vary, depending upon the apprenticeship, and may include: day release; block release; online learning; projects; and work place learning.

Alongside their training, apprentices have the opportunity to achieve a qualification by completing different types of work which will depend on the apprenticeship itself and the level of skill that it requires.

Here are examples of development programmes funded through apprenticeships:

  • MBA - suitable for Senior Managers.
  • Accountancy and Taxation - suitable for finance staff looking to become fully qualified accountants.
  • QS Degree - suitable for operational staff looking to become Chartered Quantity Surveyors.
  • Mineral Products Higher Apprenticeship - suitable for operational staff looking to become qualified in a mineral products pathway.

Devolved Nations Apprenticeships

You can follow the same process to request Apprenticeships for Wales and Scotland. However, if an employee works in England <50% of their time, then Tarmac cannot utilise its levy to fund the Apprenticeship.

This means the cost of the Apprenticeship will be come out of the Line Manager’s budget, unless it can be funded by local government schemes. Local funding schemes are managed by the HR teams who look after these areas.

The 5% Club
