What are Vocational Qualifications (VQs)?

VQs are work-based awards in the United Kingdom that are achieved through training and assessment. To achieve a VQ, candidates must prove that they have the ability (competence) to carry out their job to the required standard. Candidates must also be carrying out the task as part of their job before they can be enrolled.

VQs are based on National Occupation Standards that describe the 'competencies' expected in any given job role.

Tarmac MP Award Accredited Centre

Tarmac has its own VQ centre, this means qualifications are delivered by our people for our people. The centre is accredited by MP Awards and can deliver qualifications throughout all our operational environments.

Typical candidates will work towards a VQ that reflect their role in a paid or voluntary position.

Success stories

"I completed my SHE VQ level 4, the whole process was a great experience. It made you realise what you are doing to improve health, safety and environmental aspects on your site that you take for granted."

- Neil Redmond, Section Leader
