What is Skilled Operator Training

Ensuring new starters in our operational teams receive the training they need to perform their role effectively, is a key part of our Learning and Development Strategy.
Our current Professional Operator Development Programme is aimed at new starters that are new to the industry, but anyone who joins Tarmac with existing industry experience is not eligible for this programme.

The Skilled Operator Training programme fills this gap.

It pairs experienced new starters (and existing colleagues) with experienced Tarmac people who train them on a range of topics:

  • Induction and onboarding (including workplace induction, PPE, Licence to Operate – LTO)
  • Introduction to Occupational Health (including HAVS, dust)
  • Introduction to Safety (including Hazard Identification, Health and Safety at Work Act)
  • Environment (including housekeeping, waste disposal)
  • Specific e-learning modules (Including Working with machinery and Isolation and Stored Energy)
  • Mobile Plant Training (coaches deliver training on plant that they are competent to use)

There are also additional units covered depending on the new operative’s working environment (more info can be provided by the training manager for the region).

What are the benefits of the programme:

  • Line managers: a structured training plan and a qualified and competent employee upon completion
  • Colleagues: an industry-recognised vocational qualification plus a completed mobile plant license assessment (if doing plant VQ)

The vocational qualifications that are available to obtain are:

  • Mobile plant operations: MPQC Level 2 Diploma in Plant Operations Extractives
  • Static plant operations: MPQC Level 2 Diploma in Processing Operations for the Extractive and Minerals Processing
  • Locomotive Operations: MPQC Level 2 Certificate in Locomotive Activities for Mineral Products Operations
  • LATA Operations: MPQC Level 2 Certificate in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities for Mineral Products Operations
  • Precast Operations: MPQC Level 2 Diploma in Precast Concrete Operations

"Introducing the Skilled Operator Training means we can roll out a comprehensive induction programme to all new starters in our operational teams, regardless of whether they have existing industry experience. Offering this training to existing colleagues as well ensures our operational teams have the knowledge and the skills they need to work safely and excel in their roles."

- Peter Kay, Head of Learning & Development
